    What it can solve

Any single letter can be the unknown: x, t, a…

    Simple equations

    2x + 3 = 11

Solved exactly, the way you would on paper: move things across, then divide.

    Equations with x²

    x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0

Solved exactly with the quadratic formula. Answers can be fractions or square roots.

    Bigger powers (x³, x⁴…)

    x^3 - 7x - 6 = 0

It tries simple values first. Anything left is estimated very accurately.

    Anything else

    2^x = 10

It searches from −10¹⁰⁰ to 10¹⁰⁰ (a 1 followed by 100 zeros) for values that make both sides equal, and tells you if it finds none.

    Inequalities

    x^2 - 4 > 0

It finds where both sides are equal, tests a number in each region in between, and shades the answer on the graph.

    Several equations together

    x + y = 10

It finds values for every unknown that make all the equations true at once.

A free equation solver that shows every step

Equations Calculator is a free online equation solver that finds the answer to your equation and shows you how to get there. Type the equation the way you would write it on paper, such as 2x + 3 = 11 or x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0, and you get the solution, clear step-by-step working and a graph that shows where the answer comes from. There is nothing to install and no account to create: it works in any browser on your phone, tablet or computer.

Solve for x in any kind of equation

Use it as a linear equation solver for everyday algebra, or as a quadratic equation calculator that applies the quadratic formula and gives exact answers as fractions or simplified square roots. It also handles cubic and higher-degree polynomials, fractions with x in them, square roots, absolute values, exponential and logarithmic equations, and trigonometry in degrees or radians. When an equation has no real solution, it says so clearly and shows the complex answers instead. It is also aninequality calculator: type 2x + 3 > 7 or x^2 - 4 > 0 to see which values work, in words, in interval notation and shaded on the graph.

    Systems of equations

Need to solve two or three equations together? Switch to "Several equations", type one equation per line, and the system of equations calculator finds the value of every unknown at once. It works with up to eight unknowns, exact fractions and decimals, and it tells you when a system has no answer or endless answers.

    Examples you can try

    • 2x + 3 = 11 gives x = 4, a simple linear equation.
    • x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0 gives x = 2 or x = 3, a quadratic solved with the formula.
    • x^3 - 7x - 6 = 0 gives x = −2, −1 and 3, a cubic equation.
    • 2^x = 32 gives x = 5, an exponential equation.
    • sin(x) = 0.5 gives x = 30°, 150° and every full turn after them.
    • x^2 - 4 > 0 gives x < −2 or x > 2, an inequality.
    • x + y = 10 with x - y = 2 gives x = 6 and y = 4, a system of equations.

How to use the equation calculator

    1. Type your equation in the box. Use ^ for powers and sqrt( ) for square roots.
    2. Press Solve, or just keep typing: the answer updates as you go.
    3. Read the answer, check it on the graph, and follow the working to see each step.

    Answers you can trust

A calculator is only useful if it is right. Every answer is substituted back into your equation and checked before it appears, so you never see a wrong solution. If an equation cannot be solved reliably, or you type something the calculator does not understand, it explains the problem in plain English instead of guessing. Exact answers are shown wherever they exist, and decimal answers are accurate to about ten digits.

    Made for learning

Equations Calculator is built for students, parents, teachers and anyone who wants to understand algebra, not just get an answer. The step-by-step solutions explain what happens at each stage, from moving terms to one side to using the quadratic formula, so it works as an algebra helper for homework, revision and checking your own working. Your equations stay private, because every calculation happens on your own device.

    FAQ

    Equation calculator questions

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about solving equations.

How do I solve for x with this equation calculator?

Type your equation in the box and press Solve. For example, enter 2x + 3 = 11 and the calculator gives x = 4, the step-by-step working, and a graph showing where the answer comes from.

    Is the equation solver free?

Yes, it is completely free. There is no sign-up, no subscription and no limit on how many equations you solve. It works in any web browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

    Does it show step-by-step solutions?

Yes, every answer comes with step-by-step working in plain English. The steps show how the equation is rearranged, which formula is used, and a final check that the answer really works.

How do I solve a quadratic equation?

    Enter it as, for example, x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0. The calculator finds a, b and c, works out the discriminant b² − 4ac, and applies the quadratic formula to give exact answers such as x = 2 and x = 3.

    What is the quadratic formula?

The quadratic formula is x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a. It solves any equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0, and the calculator shows each value it uses in the working.

How do I solve a system of equations?

Choose "Several equations" and type one equation per line, such as x + y = 10 and x - y = 2. The system of equations calculator finds every unknown at once, here x = 6 and y = 4.

Can it solve equations with fractions, powers and square roots?

Yes. It solves equations with fractions, powers, square roots, absolute values, exponentials and logarithms. Answers are exact where possible, such as 3/2 or 1 + √2, with a decimal shown alongside.

Can it solve trigonometric equations in degrees?

Yes. Trigonometry uses degrees by default, so sin(x) = 0.5 gives x = 30° and 150°. You can switch to radians with one tap under the input box.

    Can it solve inequalities?

    Yes. Type an inequality with <, >, <= or >=, such as 2x + 3 > 7 or x^2 - 4 > 0. You get the answer, like x < −2 or x > 2, in interval notation too, with steps and a shaded graph.

    How accurate are the answers?

Every answer is checked by putting it back into your equation before it is shown. Exact answers are given where they exist, decimals are accurate to about ten digits, and the calculator tells you when it cannot be sure.

What does "No ordinary answer" mean?

It means no real number solves the equation. For example, x² + 4 = 0 has no real solution, so the calculator shows the complex answers instead, here x = 2i and x = −2i.
